  • Ascension (an Indie-version of World of Warcraft) allows players to mix and match Class elements to create completely unique characters, offering unparalleled customization.

One of the best things about video games is being able to truly customize the character that you want to build. Whether you're wanting an experience that is completely different each time you play, or just the ability to experience different aspects of the game, character build variety is amazing.

Some games will allow players to create something that is completely unique to them, while others will let them customize their characters to a certain extent. Here are the top MMOs that have the best variety when it comes to creating a unique character.

The Elder Scrolls In MMO Form

All Class Options:

  • Arcanist
  • Dragonknight
  • Necromancer
  • Nightblade
  • Sorcerer
  • Templar
  • Warden

The Elder Scrolls Online (one of the best MMOs on the PS5) is an MMO that is set inside the world of TheElder Scrolls, which is the same franchise as games like Oblivion and Skyrim. While the game is set in the same universe as the other games in the franchise, it isn't directly linked to those games since it takes place at a completely different time in Tamriel's history. However, players can still head to the places made famous in the other games and see what they looked like during the events of the game.

This game has a unique Class System in the fact that, while there aren't a ton of Classes, players can go into several different builds with the same Classes. Players can truly decide whether they want their Classes to focus on stealth, Magika, Stamina, melee, or a number of other Class specializations. Additionally, some Classes are able to be built to be tanks, dps, or healers depending on what the player wants. This means that players won't necessarily need to switch characters anytime they want to try something new.

  • Elementalist
  • Warrior
  • Ranger
  • Mesmer
  • Guardian
  • Revenant

Guild Wars 2 is technically the fourth game in the Guild Wars franchise, and while all the games have an excellent Class System that attracts players, this specific game is slightly better when it comes to truly allowing players to make the character that they want. It even has one of the best expansions in MMO history. The game takes place after the events of the rest of the games in the franchise and sees players as they reunite a Guild known as Destiny's Edge so that they can defeat an undead Elder Dragon.

These MMOs were the blueprints for what players can expect in today's market, providing great entertainment even from decades ago.

What makes this game truly unique is the fact that it allows players to dig deep into their character's build. There are 8 Classes (known as Professions) in the base game and an additional one (the Revenant) that was added in an expansion. With each unique Class comes 5 core Sub-Classes (known as Specializations) and 3 elite Sub-Classes. This means that while the game has 9 Classes in total, there are 72 different Sub-Classes that players can pick from, adding a ton of choices.

World of Warcraft is an MMORPG that has been around since 2004, so it is one of those that a lot of people could name, even if they have never played the game before at all. Depending on which version the player is playing (Retail or Classic), they will be following a specific storyline that, at the heart of the game, sees two warring factions (Horde and Alliance) battling against each other for the ability to control Azeroth. Players may find themselves in the lush forests of Pandaria or in the frozen grounds of Northrend (which are some of the best places to explore in MMOs).

Depending on which version players are playing, they will have a great variety of Classes and Specializations to pick from. As of now, Retail WoW offers players an amazing 13 different Class options. From there, each Class has multiple Specialization (Sub-Classes) that they can pick from. This means that one player could play a Paladin that is focused on healing, another could play a Paladin focused on tanking, and yet another could focus on damage. Depending on the Class, players will have several options to customize their character further.

World Of Warcraft With Completely Customized Classes

Ascension is technically an MMO based entirely on World of Warcraft (the developers consider it a mod for WoW though it is on its own servers). The game follows the story of WoW but allows players to pick a specific expansion (currently, only Vanilla, Burning Crusade, and Wraith of the Lich King are available) and explore the world in a completely different way. Players will certainly feel like they're in WoW but without restrictions.

7 Best MMO Games For Co-Op, Ranked

Cooperative play is often encouraged in MMO games. Here are the best ones to try out for those looking for the best co-op experiences available.

What makes this game's character build variety better than the original World of Warcraft is that it offers WoW's Classes, but instead of picking a Class, players can pick and choose what parts of the Class they want. This means that every character can essentially be completely different from all other characters in the game. Players can mix as many Classes from the original game as they want to create the perfect character.

1 Rift

The Most Options

All Class Options:

  • Cleric
  • Mage
  • Primalist
  • Rogue
  • Warrior

Rift is a Fantasy MMO that has an impressively extensive Class System. Players will take the role of the Ascended, who is a hero of their native world of Telara. However, there are forces from Elemental Planes that threaten to destroy the world. Players will need to work together to stop these forces from succeeding. The game hosts an impressive following online, meaning players will always have someone to fight with or against.

The Character System will truly make players feel like they are playing a unique character every single time. The game boasts five main Classes; however, those Classes each have 10 Sub-Classes, and players can combine up to three Sub-Classes. This means that each character can be a unique combination of the 50 Sub-Classes that are available. Having such a large mixture of Classes and Sub-Classes to pick from will keep players busy for hours.
