Bullard takes Game 1 against China Spring (2)

WEST — Kage Korenek tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Bullard Panthers to a 4-0 win over China Spring on Thursday in Game 1 of their Class 4A Region III baseball semifinal.

Game 2 is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday in Bullard. If a third game is necessary, it will follow Game 2.

Bullard improves to 32-6-2 while the Cougars fall to 30-6.

Korenek struck out one and did not walk a batter in seven innings of work.

The Panthers struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning. They added a single run in the seventh.

Reed Overbeek led the Bullard offense with a double and two RBIs.

Jackson Holt added a double with a single from Ben co*ke. David Wilson and Dylan Fowler each had RBIs.

Cage McCloud, JC Hughes and Camden Todaro each had singles for the Cougars.

Miles Vaughn started on the mound for China Spring, tossing six innings while giving up two hits and three runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Dillon Bowers threw one inning, allowing a hit and a run with two walks.

The winner of the Bullard-China Spring series advances to the regional final against either Spring Hill or Salado. Spring Hill leads the series 1-0 after a 5-0 win on Wednesday. Their series continues with Game 2 set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Corsicana High School. If a third game is needed, it will follow Game 2.

SOFTBALL

Liberty 2, Bullard 1

HUNTSVILLE — Liberty scored two runs in the sixth inning and then held off Bullard, 2-1, in Game 1 of their Class 4A Region III softball series final on Thursday.

Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Hudson High School. If a third game is needed, it is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The winner of the series advances to the state tournament next week in Austin.

Liberty improves to 38-2, while Bullard drops to 33-7-1.

Both pitchers were in control.

Bullard’s Anistyn Foster tossed six innings, allowing three hits and two runs with four strikeouts and one walk.

Liberty’s Bayleigh Taylor threw seven innings, giving up two hits and one run with 17 strikeouts and three walks.

Denim Boles had a solo home run for Bullard with Brooklyn Brannen adding a single.

Taylor had solo homer for Liberty with Hollie Thomas contributing the other RBI. Bailee Slack and Abbie Key added singles.
