(aka 'The Woman Who Wouldn't Die')
Directed by Gordon Hessler
UK 1965
Boasting a brilliantly sinuous plot with a startling denouement, this supernatural thriller marked the directorial debut of Gordon Hessler, best-known for his work on the enormously influential series Alfred Hitchco*ck Presents and The Alfred Hitchco*ck Hour, and cult horror duo The Oblong Box and Scream and Scream Again. Featuring an outstanding central performance from Gary Merrill a regular guest on Hitchco*ck series. Money and power have brought Mrs. Garth a charming husband. But despite her beauty and intelligence, she receives neither his loyalty nor his love; instead, he is infatuated with her young niece. Mrs. Garth domineering ways have also alienated her only secretary, Richard Corbett. In her safe she holds cheques once forged by Corbett and, while she is alive, he must remain within her service. To gain their freedom, the two men contemplate murdering Mrs. Garth. One weekend their plans become reality with chilling consequences. *** A rich woman who uses meditation to deal with pain is visited by her niece who returns from Paris. The woman can be a handful and one of her employees suggests to her husband that he kill her freeing them both. When an affair starts between the husband and the niece murder becomes a real possibility. However some people won't stay dead.… Posters Theatrical Release: May 5th, 1965 ReviewsMore ReviewsDVD Reviews Review: Imprint - Region FREE - Blu-ray CLICK to order from: Bonus Captures: 1.66 Disc Size: Feature: 19,149,748,224 bytes Video Bitrate: 23.99 Codec: MPEG-4 AVC Video NOTE: The Vertical axis represents the bits transferred per second. It is cited as being from a "NEW 2023 4K restoration of the original nitrate negative". We reviewed the Network PAL DVD from 2014, HERE and compared some captures below. The 1080P is quite a big improvement showing more information on the side edges, tighter, superior contrast (deeper black levels) and minor depth. It has a middling bitrate but looks quite pleasing. NOTE: We have added 48 more large resolutionBlu-raycaptures (in lossless PNG format) for DVDBeaver PatronsHERE On their Blu-ray, Imprint use a linear PCM dual-mono track (24-bit) in the original English language. Catacombs (The Woman Who Wouldn’t Die) has mild aggression audio-wise with action mostly buoyed by the score by Carlo Martelli (Do You Know This Voice, The Lost Continent, Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow,The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb) adding some mysterious atmosphere and anxious tension - excitedly scattered at times reminding me of Thelonious Monk. It is orchestral though with plenty of bass and a lone harp. It's very effective - perhaps ahead of its time. The film's audio has consistent dialogue in the uncompressed transfer. Imprint offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray. The Imprint Blu-ray Gordon Hessler's Catacombs (The Woman Who Wouldn’t Die) is based on the book by Jay Bennett with the Catacombs title. The screenplay was by Daniel Mainwaring notable for writing Build My Gallows High (as Geoffrey Holmes) and its adapted screenplay for, noir gold, Out of the Past. So there. Catacombs is a pot-boiler-ish crime, with hints of horror, evoking Henri-Georges Clouzot's Les Diabolioques. and distant echoes of Hammer's Maniac. Another keeper for me.
