"I had no idea that something so bizarre (had Darlene Greene, 62, said by telephone Sunday from her home in Portsmouth.

"I was hoping that all that time he was with friends and would call." Ellis Greene, 32, of Los Angeles was found dead April 16 in the Glendale, office of Dr. Richard Boggs, according to police. But Boggs told police the body was that of another man, Melvin Hanson, owner of the Columbus-based Just Sweats athletic clothing chain. Boggs said the man died after complaining of chest pains, and the body was cremated the next day. A few weeks later, Hanson's business partner, John Hawkins, to whom Hanson had willed his estate, filed a life insurance claim for his death.

A complaint filed Friday against Hawkins in Los Angeles Municipal Court says he has been traveling under the name of Jerry Anthony Greene. The court records show that Hawkins used the alias to obtain a Colorado driver's license Aug. 5, less than a month after collecting the money from the Farmers New World Life Insurance draining the Just Sweats accounts of about $228,000 and fleeing Columbus.

Albert MacKenzie, assistant district attorney for Los Angeles County, said a man matching Hawkins' description was seen with Boggs last week. Authorities said it's unclear whether Greene was known to any of the three men, and the method by which he was killed has not been established. But Mrs. Greene said her son, who normally called home twice a month, never mentioned Boggs, Hanson or Hawkins. Greene moved to the Los Angeles area four years ago from Ohio and was working as a tax preparer when he disappeared, his mother said.

She said she reported her son missing in April after his employer called to say Greene had not shown up for work in several days. Mrs. Greene said she did not learn of her son's death until Sept. 29, after police discovered that a thumbprint taken from the corpse did not match the one on Hanson's California driver's license. Greene initially was described by authorities as a drifter, which puzzled his mother.

"He always had a He was planning to visit me the next month (May)," she said. Boggs was arrested Friday in a parking lot behind his medical office and is being held without bond in the Glendale city jail. Hanson was captured last Sunday at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after arriving on a flight from Acapulco, Mexico.
