Abstract

This explores Poinsett’s domestic and international roles during his tenure as a representative to the 17th Congress. In the fall of 1820, Poinsett was a candidate for the first time in a national election. Although some Carolinians criticized Poinsett for working on internal improvements solely to improve his own reputation, many credited him with improved infrastructure, and soon after he won his congressional seat, he was reelected as president of the Board of Public Works. James Monroe interrupted Poinsett’s tenure in Congress for a special diplomatic mission to Mexico. Poinsett’s trip yielded a published report on Mexico’s revolution, economy, and natural and commercial resources, and a warning against US recognition of Mexican independence. When Poinsett returned to Congress, he argued similarly against Greek independence. He also advocated in favor of increased naval strength and against protective tariffs.
