Impressive passenger numbers in 2023!👏🏻At Oslo airport, 1,955,088 more foreign and 725,576 more Norwegian passengers were welcomed compared to 2022✈️Growth among Norwegians at Oslo airport was 7% and the increase in foreign passengers ended at a healthy 16%. Last month I wrapped up my time in Barcelona with the completion of a report (forthcoming) for Pla Estratègic Metropolità de Barcelona (PEMB) on Strategies for Expanding Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Instead of major demand to catapult Barcelona into the top tier of European Airports, we identified just 8 unserved destinations fit for nonstop flights. Alongside 5 existing destinations including 375K annual passengers from Los Angeles International Airport - LAX and San Francisco International Airport this totals just 1.2 Million passengers per year who could benefit from new or additional nonstop service. While this might represent 50% of Barcelona-El Prat Airport's existing capacity, this is less than 10% of the number of new long haul passengers needed for Barcelona to compete with Europe's largest airports. Last week American Airlines announced the introduction of nonstop flights between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Barcelona. Whether or not this is coincidental, I am thrilled to see the first of our identified destinations launched. 1 down, 7 to go ...

A new report from Vliegerpleinand T&E found that six out of the 10 most popular destinations flown to by private jet from Antwerp are less than 500 km away... journeys that could easily be made by trains.To make matters worse, the number of domestic private flights to other destinations in Belgium more than doubled between 2019 and 2022, while the fastest growth in traffic is being driven by holiday-goers flying privately between Antwerp and the south of France.The airport receives massive subsidies from the Flemish government to keep operations going, with the argument that these private trips are important for business. We share the same ambition: to make Amsterdam Schiphol a unique air-rail hub in Europe. We want to continue developing our existing modal shift (air to rail) partnership on Brussels-Amsterdam, but also aim to explore more complementarity between air and rail.We are committed to providing a smooth, comfortable journey for our transfer customers. We have now replaced a daily flight from Brussels to Amsterdam by train. But we are not there yet. The train should become a better alternative to short-haul flights in Europe and connect smoothly with our network. Madrid is set to endorse the development of a second airport in Casarrubios, in the province of Toledo.Which of the following arguments invoked by its promoters do you consider the most (or the least) convincing to justify this project?1️⃣ Barajas is planning to expand its capacity, but only up to 80 million passengers... This is not sufficient to meet future needs. We need to further expand airport capacity in the Madrid Region!2️⃣ Yes, after years without receiving a single commercial flight, the Ciudad Real airport, originally built with the same objective, was eventually converted into a parking lot and, more recently, into a maintenance site. But don’t worry! Casarrubios is closer to Madrid. This time things will be different!3️⃣ Both Paris and London have secondary airports. Why doesn’t Madrid have one too?
