State Tears, cheers mix from returning troops Tears mixed with cheers marked homecoming ceremonies for more than 100 Alabama troops trickling back from the Persian Gulf war zone.

The tears were for 19-year-old Pfc. John Wesley Hutto of Andalusia. Killed in action, Hutto was buried Sunday. A member of the 24th Infantry at Ft. Stewart, Hutto was killed just hours before the cease-fire order came.

In Alexander City, a funeral is scheduled Tuesday for Thomas Randy Jerrell, a member of the 214th Military Police Co. He was killed March 2 when another soldier's weapon fired by accident in the Persian Gulf. In Huntsville, Marine Capt. James "Trey" Wilbourn will be buried Tuesday. He died on Feb.

23 when his AV-88 Harrier jump jet was shot down in Kuwait. Wilbourn was an Auburn graduate and Huntsville native. National Guard officials expect full units will be returning later, but for now some soldiers have been lucky enough to fill vacant airplane seats destined for home. Piedmont man involved in two fatalities PIEDMONT (AP) A Piedmont man was involved in two fatal traffic accidents a year apart and has not been tried in either one. In both cases, police say, he was impaired by drugs or alcohol. Thirteen months passed before Joseph E. Dempsey was charged in the first accident, leaving him behind the wheel for the second. On Dec.

22, 1989, Dempsey, then 34, was driving on Interstate 59 when the car went through several plastic barrels at a highway construction site and crashed into equipment, authorities said. Dempsey was not hurt but a piece of equipment entered the skull of a passenger, Michael Partin, 18, of Piedmont, who died 13 days later. In recent years, according to Piedmont police, Dempsey has been arrested twice on DUI charges. Sgt. Jerry Pounds said he set fire to his jail cell mattress after one arrest.

Police also said there had been complaints about harassment of his former wife. Last December, Jonathan Fred Smith, a Samford University divinity student, was returning to his Odenville home when his pickup broke down near Leeds on 1-20. As a wrecker service was hooking up his truck, another pickup, driven by Dempsey, struck and killed Smith, authorities said. Tallapoosa authorities capture escapees DADEVILLE (AP) Authorities brought escape charges Monday against three prisoners, including one found under a nursing home after the trio forced a guard at knifepoint to free them from the Tallapoosa County Jail. Sheriff Joe Smith said the jailer, Jay Powell, was forced to open a cell about 4:15 p.m.

Sunday by the prisoners, one of them wielding a homemade knife. The prisoners then forced Powell to hand over the jail keys, Smith said, and ripped out a telephone, took the jail's petty cash and locked Powell in the jail. Smith said Henry "Bo Bo" Greer, 29, of Tallassee was as he ran off the jail elevator.
