Job DescriptionThe Transactional Attorney will be an integral part of the legal team supporting the University of Missouri System and its four university campuses. This position will provide legal guidance on routine, moderately complex, and complex matters, aiming to ensure compliance with legal standards and policies. The attorney will collaborate within the transactional legal team to enhance processes and offer expertise to less experienced members when necessary. They will work with university academic and business leaders to analyze problems, assess risks, and inform decisions that impact policies, procedures, and practices. Significant experience in business transactions, contracts, and corporate matters is preferred. Areas of focus may include procurement, finance, investment, charitable giving, real estate, investment, governmental, regulatory, academic, research and/or athletics programs.
Key Responsibilities
Provide legal advice and counsel to the University's operations and schools on routine, moderately complex, and complex legal matters.
Analyze problems, assess needs, and exercise judgment in adapting broad guidelines to achieve desired results.
Make recommendations affecting policies, procedures, and practices, referring exceptions to senior attorneys when necessary.
Coordinate with the contracting office and business leaders on transactional matters, including contract negotiation and drafting.
Assess the application of university policy and legal authorities to varied client scenarios, involving other stakeholders and decision-makers within the university as needed.
Evaluate legal, operational, and financial risks to determine when items should be elevated within the Office of General Counsel and/or to university academic and business leaders.
Offer guidance and expertise to less experienced team members upon request.
Collaborate within the transactional legal team to enhance processes and promote compliance with legal standards and policies.
Conduct training sessions to equip University faculty and staff with the necessary legal knowledge and skills for their roles.
Engage in routine contact with senior management and leaders in schools and operations.

The Transactional Attorney will play a critical role in supporting university leaders and management and ensuring the legal integrity and compliance of operations and schools within the University of Missouri System. This position offers an opportunity to make a significant impact on the delivery of quality academic services and the advancement of higher education and research.

Monday - Friday 8am-5pm
Minimum Qualifications
A Juris Doctor or LLB degree from an ABA accredited law school and at least 4 years of experience with a significant specialized experience in at least one area
License to practice law in Missouri or eligible for admission to the Missouri Bar
Preferred QualificationsPreferred Qualifications:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Ability to work collaboratively within a team and independently.
Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, including privacy laws and laws applicable to higher education.
Prior experience with business transactions and contract negotiation, drafting, and review for public entities and academic institutions.
Demonstrated ability to handle highly complex information with sensitivity and discretion.
Membership in relevant professional organizations or associations related to academic, transactional or governmental law.
Proficiency in standard business and legal office application systems/software, along with comfort in utilizing business and legal applications.
Anticipated Hiring Range
Compensation starts at $135,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualification
