Electronic travel certificate

I just booked a ticket using ETC, which came from one UA ticket refund. If I have to cancel it withing 24 hours, will I see ETC with the same PIN number back to my MP account? Or I will get a new PIN number and how soon? Thanks!

Nope. Comes with a new Cert/PIN. I haven't canceled a ticket with a TCVA used in a couple of years, but I used to do the cancelation on the phone, and the agent could usually give the new TCVA and PIN right away. Not sure if this is still the case. Even if not, I believe they now at least email the new info - even a 2-3 years ago, it used to be sent by snail mail (supposedly, since I never successfully received those, and always had to call back in and get passed on to several people to get the info.).

I just received a new ETC TCVA-type voucher, today. I used one, cancelled the trip, and spoke to an agent who said it is now re-activated because "sometimes they can do that". I booked a dummy reservation and attempted to apply the voucher and it failed.

I called in, spent 33 minutes on the phone with an agent, who then spent 30 minutes on the phone apologizing about the delay. She ultimately said I will be getting a new voucher. Five days later, and stillno voucher. An email to Customer Care came two days ago saying a new voucher would be processed within 2-3 days. Oh, and it said as a gesture of good will, they are extending the usable dates.

I'm happy it was resolved, though the time I spent working to get it, was probably more valuable than the $100 credit I have.

In the past 5 years or so I must have received more than a dozen TCVA certs. Every single time the phone agent told me that a PIN number will be mailed to me in snail mail. But I have never received any, not even once. I think they probably are never mailed. You have to get the number from the phone agent. I do not understand why UA keep saying they will be mailed.

Yes, the ticket, which was paid with CC and ETC, was cancelled on Thursday within 24 hours window. Got an email from United Refund dept. this morning with a new PIN number.

How to tell if 24 hour refund applies online

I put a reservation on hold online myself, then ticketed yesterday within 24 hours.

I now want to cancel for full refund (still < 24 hours since ticketing, but > 24 hours since PNR creation).

When attempting to cancel online, it just shows the payment information (I used TravelBank funds), and the option to credit towards my original payment method, or towards a future purchase.

It does not make mention of any fees/penalties.

Will I get a full refund? I would prefer to avoid calling.

I've learned to always call in for this, since it doesn't work half the time anyway. But especially since the last time when I specifically requested a refund, but it only did the cancel part. Agent confirmed and did he refund.

Does checking in for a flight and obtaining a boarding pass for a flight negate the ability to cancel a flight within the 24 hour window? Does it matter if it's an international ticket operated on all United metal?

Do this often on domestic tickets and never been a problem whatsoever. I would assume it would also work with international ones.

No. I've done this before and not had any problems.

But keep in mind that in situations like this the DOT rules don't apply as they are only when you buy the ticket at least 7 days before travel. UA's rules (stated in their CoC) do not have the 7 day limit so you're still good for the refund, but it's under their rules and not the DOT.

Yea right. You go try this with any of the Asian carriers flying to/from USA, I bet they don't know what you are talking about. You are on your own to argue with them.

Cathay Pacific is one Asian carrier that knows the reach of the U.S. DOT.

If carriers want to fly to the U.S., they have to comply with applicable U.S. law. Passengers need to know the nuances of what law covers and what it doesn't.

I have cancelled a couple of flights just the past two weeks or so, including one yesterday. No issues for me. I call UA Reservations and request a confirmation email be sent this way there is no confusion that the cancellation went through. If I do not see a credit on my card I have something to take to the credit card company and to United.

I just tried to do this (cancel award ticket within 24 hours that was booked online on United) and it appeared to be saying it WILL charge the redeposit fee of $200 per traveler. I clicked on cancel and redeposit, and it then specifically asked if I wanted to pay the redeposit fee with the same or different method of payment than the one I had used for taxes/fees originally. The prospect of being hit with $400 in fees (for 2 pax) was enough to scare me off from proceeding. Does anyone have recent experience or suggestions? Perhaps the rule has changed?

Call to do this and don't wait till close to the deadline.

There been some different issues on fee waiver for elites and this may be related BUT the is no change in policy (even if UA wanted to change the policy, the DOT requires a 24 hour "I can change my mind window" for most tickets including awards).
So if you are truly in the 24 hour window for a new ticket, there is no cancellation fee.

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 4:45 pm.
