Kimberly Davis, director of L.A. Louver Gallery in the Los Angeles suburb of Venice Beach. said Kienholz died of a heart attack Friday morning in his home in Hope, Idaho.

"He had not been in ill health but he was a diabetic." she said. His main body of work was seen as social comments on the seamier side of life, such as prostitution, child abuse, abortion, death, poverty and the horror of war. Kienholz came to national attention in 1966 with his work, "Back Seat Dodge '38." It depicted a couple making love in the back seat of a car and SO outraged the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors that they tried to ban it from the Los Angeles County Museum. Kienholz prevailed, but the supervisors had the sculpture moved to a less prominent position. "Dodge" is still in the museum and was recently moved to a place of prominence, Ms.

Davis said. Kienholz continued to grow in stature as a sculptor but his work stayed controversial, depicting, among other things, dens of prostitution. His sculptures can be found in museums and art galleries throughout Europe, including Paris; Berlin, Stuttgart and Cologne, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Stockholm, Sweden; and Copenhagen, Denmark, Ms. Davis said.
